Do you find yourself avoiding the dental treatment you know you need? Or even skipping your routine preventive check-ups? Approximately 1-in-3 adults have some type of dental anxiety. Others simply have sensitive teeth, a tender gag reflex, or uncomfortable thoughts of past experiences in the dental office. But don’t let these reasons make you fall behind on your dental care. Otherwise, your oral health needs will only become worse.
Dr. Barnett and our experienced staff offer sedation dentistry to make your visit more comfortable.
Types of Dental Sedation
Curious about the most common types of dental sedation?
Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is one that’s inhaled. It provides a very gentle and light level of relaxation while you are still awake. This mild sedation allows a carefree sensation that relaxes the mind, almost like drinking a glass of wine. The effects diminish quickly so that you can resume normal activities.
Moderate sedation involves taking a prescribed medication to give you a level of grogginess that can relax you enough to feel like you’re napping, but you’re still semi-conscious. A friend will need to drive you home.
General anesthesia (GA) is the deepest option and is completed with an anesthesiologist, usually at a hospital. With GA significant, a significant amount of corrective treatment is performed all at once with you returning home the same day.
