Do you have a full or partial denture that feels loose or rubs your mouth whenever you wear it? Is it difficult to eat because your “plate” is always slipping out of place or causing sore spots? There are certain reasons why someone’s denture might become looser or more uncomfortable over time. Here are just a few examples:
You’re Wearing Your Denture When You Sleep
You must never sleep in your dentures. Your gum tissues and bone need time to rest and “breath” at least some point in the day. Sleeping in your dentures will cause unwanted changes in the shape of your mouth. In turn, your prosthesis will no longer fit properly. You’ll also be at a higher risk of oral infections.
Your Denture is Old
After so many years, it’s natural for acrylic dentures to start wearing out. As the acrylic begins to thin, it no longer creates a closely-fitted seal against your gum tissues. This can cause a loose fit or create discomfort during the daytime.
Your Bone Shape is Changing or You’ve Lost Teeth
Bone resorption (shrinking) is a natural side effect of tooth loss. Without natural teeth stimulating your jaw, the bone will gradually shrink away. If you’ve lost additional teeth since your denture was fitted, the shape of your mouth is going to change.
