For the most part, dental plans usually cover preventative services (like exams and cleanings) at or near 100%. The included procedures can typically only be performed 1-2 times per year, like one set of X-rays, six-month cleanings, etc.

And then there’s restorative treatments. Let’s say that your plan covers 70% of the price of a dental filling. If you’re allowed up to a set dollar amount of coverage per year, the 70% that your insurance pays for will go toward that total. Eventually once you reach that dollar figure, the benefits expire or run out until the next calendar year. Keep in mind that you might also have a deductible to meet; if so, your restorative coverage will begin the moment you’ve reached your required out-of-pocket amount.
